Parliamentary Library Wins National Innovation Award
The Parliamentary Library has won the 2005 Australian Government Libraries Information Network (AGLIN) National Innovation Award for the Electronic Media Monitoring (EMMS) system developed by Visionbytes.
The independent panel of judges assessed the Library’s system as the most innovative based on a set of criteria that included contribution to delivery of organisational outcomes in terms of core business, and business capability improvements achieved including dollars saved, organization improvement, service improvement and customer satisfaction.
The EMMS system allows Senators and Members to browse, search and view TV and radio news and current affairs on desktop PCs. The items are recorded in Canberra by Parliamentary Library staff and published onto the EMMS web site for access by Senators, Members and their staff in Parliament House and their electorate offices.
The system records 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so that any items not scheduled to be automatically published to the web site can be retrieved and published for clients to access. In addition, the system captures closed captions for television items, so that the text of items can be searched and retrieved.
The award was presented to the Parliamentary Library at a ceremony at Old Parliament House on 12 July.
